Introduction – Brief comparison between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001 Emphasise that clause 1 to 3 are essentially the same for both.

Implementation Journey

Clause 4: Context of the organisation 

Key Theme:

  • A SWOT analysis of the entire organisation analysing internal/external issues as well as interested parties from a risk-based thinking perspective to ensure sustainability for the business as well as all relevant stakeholders.

Clause 5: Leadership and commitment

Key Theme:

  • Top Management and active participation 
  • Leadership aligns the organisation to ISO
  • Taking ultimate accountability for the performance of the system

Clause 6: Planning

Key Theme: 

  • Be consistent with policies
  • Account for applicable laws
  • Measure, monitor and communicate
  • Regular reviews and updates
  • Implement the actions/decisions based on the SWOT analysis from Clause 4
  • Conducting hazard identification and risk assessment

Clause 7: Support (The means by which objectives are met).

  • Dependencies of the system.
  • Equipment and empowering the system to deliver on performances.
  • The enablers of Clauses 4 & 6 focusing mainly on resources,
  • The 6 M’s e.g. control of documentation as 1

Clause 8: Operations. (Where rubber meets the road)

  • Establishing operating criteria for the various processes based on the actions determined from Clause 4 (Organisational Context) and Clause 6 (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment)
  • Execute your plans to manage hazards, risks and opportunities.
  • Out sourcing of work.  Contractor control including procurement and outsourcing.

Clause 9: Performance Evaluation

  • Elements for OHSMS check-up.
  • The system cycles back to leadership and new opportunities for plan.
  • Conducting internal audits and compliance evaluation
  • The importance of Management review

Clause 10: Improvement. (Not perfection but the pursuit of perfection)
